Monday Geology Picture: South African Wind Farm

South Africa is currently facing a significant shortage of electricity. Recently, there have been regular periods of “load shedding” or planned power outages. Basically, there is often not enough power to go around, so the power is purposely turned off on a rotating schedule. In the neighborhood where I live and work in Cape Town, the power is regularly turned off for two hours a day or sometimes for four or more hours per day. As you can imagine, these regular power outages are quite disruptive to work and home life and certainly have a negative impact on the economy.

There is a great need for more power sources here in South Africa. Thus, I was quite pleased when I recently drove past a relatively new wind farm near Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. As the wind turbines spun, I smiled thinking about the power that they are diligently producing. Although wind farms will probably only play a small role in solving South Africa’s energy crisis, every little bit helps. Also, every megawatt of power produced by a wind farm is one less megawatt of power than needs to be produced by “dirtier” carbon emitting power plants, such as coal plants.

Monday Geology Picture: Listwanite Hills in the Sultanate of Oman

Today I am going to share some pictures of listwanite (also sometimes spelled listvenite, listvanite, or listwaenite), an unusual  rock type that I bet even some of the well-educated geologists who read this blog have never seen or even read about. I don’t even think there’s a wikipedia entry about listwanite. Perhaps I’ll write one after my thesis defense next month.

Listwanite forms when ultramafic rocks (most commonly mantle peridotites) are completely carbonated. The pyroxene and olivine minerals found in peridotite commonly alter to form carbonate and serpentine minerals. However, peridotites are usually not completely carbonated. Rather, they typically contain carbonate veins (primarily magnesite; also calcite, dolomite, and other carbonates). Complete carbonation of peridotite means that every single atom of magnesium and calcium as well as some of the iron atoms has combined with CO2 to form  secondary carbonate minerals such a magnesite and calcite. The silica atoms in listwanite are found in quartz. Thus, liswanites consist of quartz (a rusty red color) and  carbonate and also sometimes talc and Cr-muscovite (a mineral known as mariposite/fuchsite).  Geologists are still studying how listwanites form, but they likely form through the interaction of CO2-rich fluids with peridotites at higher than ambient temperatures up to ~200 degrees Celsius. Structural controls (faults and fractures) permit the percolation of the CO2-rich fluids through peridotite, so the formation of listwanites is generally structurally controlled.

Listwanites are important rocks to study for a number of reasons. First of all, listwanites contain large amounts of CO2 which originated from fluids and which is now stored in solid mineral form.  Recently, geologists and other scientists have been investigating the potential of storing CO2 in solid minerals (which are more stable than CO2 stored as a liquid or gas) through carbonation of mafic and ultramafic rocks (see, for example, this Nature Geoscience Progress Article by Matter and Kelemen, 2009). Mafic and ultramafic rocks uptake significant CO2 through their natural alteration processes (that’s what I study for my PhD, so expect more on this in the next year or so as I submit my papers for publication). However, the natural carbonation rates of these rocks are too slow to significantly offset anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Therefore, scientists are currently investigating if it is possible to geoengineer CO2 uptake in mafic and ultramafic rocks so that this CO2 uptake happens more quickly. This could be done, perhaps, by fracturing and heating and injection of CO2-rich fluids. This is already being tested in mafic basalts through the CarbFix Project in Iceland.

However, scientists and engineers still have plenty of work to do in order to figure out the right conditions and protocols for CO2 sequestration in mafic and ultramafic rocks. In order to learn about what conditions lead to complete carbonation of ultramafic rocks, scientists such as Peter Kelemen and Gregory Dipple (and their many grad students and collaborators) are working to learn more about listwanites to see if mother nature can provide some clues.

In addition to the recent interest in listwanites for carbon sequestration efforts, listwanites are also important because they are often associated with economic mineral deposits, particularly gold deposits.

So, now that I’ve explained what listwanites are and why they are important, here are some pictures of listwanites which I observed during my trip to Oman back in January. Listwanites are pretty neat rocks, aren’t they?

Global Warming is Scary

A scary-looking children's book about global warming.

When I was visiting my friends in Abu Dhabi a couple of weeks ago, we had dinner at a local mall just before I headed to the airport for my flight home to South Africa. As we were leaving the mall, I bought myself a few children’s books in Arabic. After I finish up my PhD in April, I’m hoping to work through these Arabic children’s books as a way to help me dust off and improve my Arabic. As I was selecting books in Arabic, my eye caught this very scary book on global warming. I think this book will give children– and possibly also adults– nightmares. But maybe that’s a good thing considering that climate change denialism is rampant throughout the world, especially the United States. Coming from the US, I was actually very impressed that South Africa has frequent government-sponsored ads (billboards, radio ads, TV ads) that try to educate people about climate change, probably largely because of the recent climate change talks in Durban.

Climate change is scary, just like the cover of the above children’s book. Having 7 billion humans on the planet emitting tons of CO2 and using up all kinds of other natural resources is scary. Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are affecting Earth’s climate and this is a cause for concern. Period. People are welcome to argue about the details, such as just how much sea level might rise and how badly different cities will be affected. People are welcome to argue about the best ways to combat climate change. People are welcome, even, to argue about if we should do anything at all to combat anthropogenic climate change. I have no problem with productive, intelligent discussions on the matter, and I respect people’s opinions on how much– or little– action we should take to combat anthropogenic climate change. However, I do have a problem if you say anthropogenic climate change doesn’t exist. Anthropogenic climate change is a reality, and denying that anthropogenic climate change exists is just as bad (scientifically) as denying that evolution exists. However, an alarmingly high number of people deny that anthropogenic climate change is real. In fact, the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), an organization that for years has advocated and fought to have the scientific theory of evolution taught in schools in the United States, is now tackling the issue of teaching climate science in schools as well. Bravo, NCSE. I wish you well in your endeavors to educate people about climate science. If you run into trouble making people understand why teaching climate science is important, maybe you can scare them by buying a few million copies of the scary global warming book above. Although perhaps there’s some junk science in there (as far as I know, the Earth isn’t going to catch on fire as a result of climate change…), so maybe it would be best to stick with the excellent material already on your website.

Geology Word of the Week: T is for Travertine

Over the past several months, I have been working my way through the alphabet, from A is for Alluvium to S is for Speleothem. I hope you enjoy this weekly feature!

1. Formal and specific: “A chemically-precipitated continental limestone formed around seepages, springs, and along streams and rivers, occasionally in lakes and consisting of calcite or aragonite, of low to moderate intercrystalline porosity and often high mouldic or framework porosity within a vadose or occasionally shallow phreatic environment. Precipitation results primarily through the transfer (evasion or invasion) of carbon dioxide from or to a groundwater source leading to calcium carbonate supersaturation, with nucleation/growth occurring upon a submerged surface (Pentecost, 2005).”

Translation of the above + a little more: A type of limestone (a calcium-rich rock composed primarily of the CaCO3 minerals calcite and aragonite) which forms by chemical precipitation (the stuff that makes the rock falls out of solution) from certain types of shallow or surface waters, such as springs and rivers. The trigger for the precipitation is usually gain or loss of carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes a pH change and changes the solution chemistry so that CaCO3 precipitates. This gain or loss of CO2 usually happens very close to the Earth’s surface as the CO2 is lost to or gained from the atmosphere. The waters that produce travertines are usually very acidic (low pH) or very alkaline (high pH). Often, travertines precipitate from acidic hotsprings, such as those at Yellowstone in the Western USA. However, contrary to many web sources (this wikipedia article, for instance), travertines do not always form at hotsprings; they can also form from cooler waters. Closely related to the word travertine is another T word: tufa. The difference between travertine and tufa is porosity– tufa is a type of highly porous travertine that generally forms from cooler waters (not hotsprings).

If you’re not a geologist– and even if you are– you might associate the word “travertine” more with fancy tiles and kitchen countertops than with geology. That’s okay– travertine tiles and countertops can be very beautiful. Personally, I’d love to have some gorgeous travertine in my kitchen or bathroom. Since I work on travertines as part of my PhD, such tiles and countertops would be part of my geology dreamhouse. However, perhaps it’s best that I don’t have any travertine in my kitchen. If I did, every time some poor houseguest complimented me on my beautiful kitchen I’d probably subject this poor person to a long lecture on just how amazing travertine is scientifically and what I’ve learned from studying travertines in Oman. I’d probably go on to excitedly point to a small layer or feature in a tile and bemoan how some of the textural characteristics were lost when the piece of travertine was polished to make it into a tile. Since my soon-to-be husband is also a geologist, he’d probably join in on the discussion and we’d scare away our poor houseguest.

However, the value of travertine goes beyond the economic value of certain types of travertine as ornamental stones. There is also much scientific value that can be gleaned from studying travertine. Also, I’d argue that the beauty of seeing many travertines in their natural environment– no polishing– goes far beyond the beauty of any travertine tile or countertop. At least for me, anyway.

There are many good scientific reasons to study travertine. For example, study of carbon and oxygen isotopes in travertines (especially speleothem-type travertines that form in caves) can provide a chemical record about how the climate of a region has varied in the past. Study of travertines and the fluids from which they precipitate can also provide information about shallow groundwater. Since many travertines form from high-temperature springs (often heated by magma, such as at Yellowstone), study of these types of travertines can provide information on a volcanic system, such as water-magma interaction. As I mentioned in the definition above, travertines usually precipitate from either very high pH or very low pH waters. Study of the critters (bugs and fishy things and microbes) that hang out in these extreme pH environments provides interesting information about life in extreme environments, which might provide helpful information relevant to looking for life on other planets and figuring out the origin of life on our own planet. These are just a few of the ways that studying travertine is scientifically valuable.

Why do I study travertine, you might be wondering? Well, I study travertine because I am interested in learning more about how travertine interacts with atmospheric CO2. As many of you know, CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Humans release CO2 to the atmosphere through burning of fossil fuels. There is currently much effort being put forth around the world to investigate how we can reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions and– maybe– even geoengineer our environment so that we can remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in another reservoir, such as underground in an abandoned oil well or a porous sedimentary layer.

Most travertines precipitate when water degasses CO2 to the atmosphere. This happens through the reverse of the following reaction:

However, a few travertines– such as the ones I study in Oman– actually precipitate when CO2 is “sucked up” into the water from the atmosphere. This happens through the following reaction:

If you think about it, this is really, really cool! Travertines that form in this manner are naturally sucking up CO2 from the atmosphere and storing this CO2 in solid rock– travertine. For my thesis research, I am studying the formation of such travertines from very high pH (highly alkaline) natural groundwaters (most are pH = 11-12) that occur in peridotite rocks in Oman. Very high pH groundwaters are rare, but they are found at several places around the world.

Below are some pictures of travertines I’ve encountered in my geology travels and research. The Omani travertines are my favorite. I think the newly-formed travertine looks like snow in the Omani desert. Click on any of the pictures below to view larger.

A final note: I really like the first definition above, which I took from a book called “Travertine” by Allan Pentecost. I like this definition because it is very specific, descriptive, and inclusive. However, this type of definition is probably daunting for the non-geologist. A common problem with definitions of scientific words is that they contain more scientific words. As a geologist who works on travertine, I am familair with the other sciencey words such as “aragonite”, “mouldic”, and “vadose.” However, I can see how a non-geologist might struggle with the first definition of the word travertine. In the second definition, I have tried to define travertine in plainer language.
