Monday Geology Picture: Green Countertop

I’m traveling for business at the moment and living out of hotel rooms for a week or so. My current hotel room has a pretty green rock for the bathroom countertop. It’s most likely a green soapstone of some sort. Can anyone identify those interesting black minerals?

  1. hi,

    just discovered this blog.

I am guessing that the counter top is made of something harder that soapstone/serpentinite, which is a metamorphic rock with water in its chemical structure. Soapstone can be carved—not something you want to happen to a countertop.

In my bathroom I have a green granite. Your black flecks are probably biotite. (I have garnets in my countertop.) Blue and green granites are related to rifted zones—see Quincy quarries (boston) blue granite.
