This afternoon my dad and I recorded our 17th interview on the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster. Please see the rest of the blog (sidebar) for previous interviews. (a.) Can you explain some of the different units that are used to measure radiation and radioactivity?
(b.) Can you comment on the radiation reports on the MEXT website?
(c.) Is it possible the Fukushima plants did have hardened vents but they were inoperable due to air-operated valves which were dependent on air compressors which were without power?
(d.) In the US plants are required to show they can survive an extended station blackout (this sort of accident) and make design and procedure changes if they couldn’t under their original design. Did the Japanese regulator follow the US lead in this area?

I have just watched April 3 update from Fairewinds.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B15Kr97SAqoIt mentions some worrying data released by TEPCO that suggests an 'inadvertent criticality' occuring at Unit 1..The data includes the detection of:neutron bursts 1 mile away from reactorChlorine 38 (as a byproduct of Chlorine 37 from seawater + neutron)Telerium 129 (which can only exist if fission is occuring)high levels of Iodione 131 (compared with Unit 2 & 3).. Can your dad comment on these findings and what the implications may be?

For those interested on further updates after you and your father end yours I reccommend:fairewinds.com..Arnold Gundersen does regular updates in plain english and is one of the few sources that is not influenced by Nuclear industry interests..Gunderson is a Nuclear Engineer and licensed Nulcear Plant operator..

I prowled around the MEXT website a bit more and it looks like they provide soil readings and water readings as well. The soil reading is under the category "dust reading," which may be a poor translation from the original Japanese. The document does contain soil readings if you scroll to the lower half however.http://www.mext.go.jp/english/radioactivity_level/detail/1303962.htmNo plain English analysis unfortunately, but I guess that's why we need smart folks like you and your Dad!-Mike (Tokyo)
